Weak dollar hurts Cognis' North American operation
Cognis Group's global sales increased 4 percent to $3.5 billion euros, with lower sales in North America partially offsetting higher revenues in Germany and Asia. Sales at its Cincinnati-based North American business fell 4 percent to 766 million euros due to the decline in the value of the dollar, the company said Thursday.
The German-based producer of chemicals and food ingredients, which is owned by private equity funds, said organic sales growth excluding foreign currency effects and acquisitions and divestitures rose 6.5 percent.
Earnings before interest and taxes increased 9 percent to 225 million euros. A net loss of 120 million euros was attributed to the impact of certain financing fees, corporate tax changes in Germany, and a companywide cost-optimization project.
Sales at Cognis Oleochemicals, its joint venture with Malaysia's Sime Darby that operates a plant on Este Avenue in Cincinnati, were up 8 percent to 599 million euros.
